Project Scope: Repair and restoration of boundary walls

Upnor Castle is an Elizabethan artillery fort built between 1559 and 1567, commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I to protect warships at Chatham’s historic dockyards. The castle and associated Grade I* listed buildings are surrounded by boundary walls featuring a mixture of stone curtain walling and bricks.

Areas of the boundary walls required sensitive repair and stabilisation work which was carried out in association with English Heritage.

A custom blend of imperial Oxford Yellow Multi Waterstruck bricks with a bespoke weathered finish were chosen to replace damaged bricks and blend in sympathetically with existing brickwork to preserve the character of this significant Scheduled Ancient Monument.
